A nationwide art competition, AN ARTISTIC DISCOVERY, has been coordinated and conducted by Members of the House of Representatives in their own districts since 1981. The competition is open to high school students and provides Members of Congress and the public the opportunity to recognize the artistic talents of our youth.
Congressman Sander Levin, will have an awards ceremony and reception for all the student exhibitors, their teachers, families and friends in our district at the WarrenCity Hall in May. The artwork will be displayed at the WarrenCity Hall atrium.
Several schools in Region 6, have had or are having artwork on display to celebrate Youth Arts Month.
Thank you to all of the Region 7 MAEA members who participated in the "Young at Art" show during the month of February. Art teachers and students alike should be extremely proud of the quality and variety of the artwork submitted! Numerous teachers, administrators, and staff members gave the show rave reviews. Congratulations to those students whose artwork was chosen to go the state level for judging. The adjudication will take place on March 13th and you will be notified of the results soon after that date. Check the website for dates and times of the various state shows.

Region 10: Region 10 liaison officers are Jean Kempa jkempa@dishmail.net and Marianna Fiedor mfiedor@hotmail.com. We are here to assist you with region activities.
We plan to have a workshop for teachers this summer on students writing learning statement to go with their entries for the region exhibit.
We are looking forward to the region show being bigger and better than ever. We can only achieve this with your help and your students’ creativity.
The region 10 show was a success. We had about 75 pieces on exhibit from February 23rd thru March 6th. We had a reception that was attended by students and parents, with advocacy flyers and MAEA posters. Gallery 194 is very interested in promoting the visual and performing arts in LapeerCounty. We are very lucky to have such a great venue like the gallery to display the student's work.
Make sure if you are not getting information and you are a member to email us so we can correct the problem.

Region 11:
Region 11 had a very successful show for the entire month of February. The SaginawArt Museum gave us the entire 2nd floor for the show. It was well attended and the students were excited to have their work exhibited where they usually are looking at the masters. We are very lucky to have the SaginawArt Museum take this show on.

Region 15:
We had our region show at the Artcenter in Traverse City February 12-26. It was a really nice show and our members are submitting more work so it was very exciting! We also opened up the show to non MAEA members to network and try to recruit a few and it was very helpful.
Contact Sarah DeKett with any questions: sarahdekett@yahoo.com
Region 15 Liaisons are Sarah DeKett and Kat Murphy. Sarah teaches high school art in Mesick and Kat teaches 7-12 art in Leland. 2009 was the first year we had a region show and we plan to have it every year during the month of February. This year we had a matting party so that every member would know the correct way to submit work to the state exhibit. Unfortunately we do not have many active members, so please contact us with any questions you may have and join us in promoting and exhibiting student artwork in the state of Michigan! Please contact by email: deketts@mesick.org or kmurphy@leland.k12.mi.us (Kat Murphy, kmurphy@leland.k12.mi.us, Sarah DeKett, deketts@mesick.org)
Region 16, 17, 18:
Greetings. Regions 16-18 encompass the whole UP! Because of our large area, we do not have a regional exhibit. Individual areas hold their own shows and teachers select several of their best pieces to submit to the state competitions. Members either have to mail their work or deliver it to the liaisons, which can sometimes mean a 6 hour drive! At this time, we have 2 liaisons in our region: Melissa Hronkin in the West (Ontonagon) and Karen Blaskowski in the East (Sault Ste. Marie). Sometimes we throw letters in bottles to each other (in Lake Superior) to communicate.
Recently, a local news paper has been helping to promote the area schools’ art programs by featuring Student Artist of the week for Chippewa, Luce and Mackinaw counties in their Arts & Entertainment section. We also received an email from another MAEA Upper Peninsula member who was informed by her school that her school eliminated for the elementary and middle school due to budget cuts and the high school students will now take their art class on line, using MichiganVirtual
High School. Her words” Isn't that great? I'm being replaced by a computer! I wonder if any MAEA members are involved with this. We shouldn't be. It's putting teachers out of jobs...” Sad.
