Artwork Drop Off - Thursday, January 26 4pm-7pm
***Please prepare artwork following the guidelines provided on the MAEA website. Artwork must be rigid backed, not just matted – Anything sturdy: cardboard or foam core (I use old display board students don’t take home from other class projects or the big boxes that paper or posters gets shipped in.) We cannot take artwork to Lansing for the MAEA adjudications that does not follow the MAEA preparation guidelines. If you haven’t checked out the new and improved MAEA website, I recommend you do. Here is a link for the artwork guidelines, you may need to scroll down: http://www.miarted.org/events.php
If you need acetate, hanging hooks, or just help with preparing artwork, please let me know. If people would like an “Artwork Preparation Party” we can try to accommodate that.
***Non-MAEA members may submit artwork to be displayed as a celebration of the artwork our talented students create. However, it will not be juried to move on to the State Division shows adjudication process. Please limit submissions to 5 pieces per division (elementary, middle, high school). Non-MAEA members do not need to wrap the artwork in acetate, but please have the work rigid backed.
Our Region 11 show drop off will be Thursday, Jan. 26 from 4-7pm at the Saginaw Art Museum for the artwork submission. Remember, this show is for all Region 11 art teachers, regardless of MAEA membership.
Our show is going to be great this year, as always! Something different this year that I am excited about, at our closing reception I will be introducing an artist that will be doing art in Saginaw this summer. His artwork will also be incorporated into the space of the museum. This is through the work of a new committee of volunteers, Art and About (check out our Facebook page). This committee was responsible for bringing the Seward Johnson sculptures to Saginaw this past summer.
Our closing reception will be on Feb. 19th from 1-3 p.m.
As long as the weather permits, Steve Harryman, a filmmaker/videographer, will be there to make a promotional video to help promote art education and art within our community.
The artist I will be introducing will attend the reception
I am hoping to be communicating with you soon about a workshop for art teacher in March. Coming soon!
Soon, I will send out more for the show (certificates, invitations, etc.)
CALL FOR HELP! Melissa will stay on as a Region Liaison, but will not be able to help as much this year. I am pregnant again and expecting my 3rd child in May. So, needless to say, if anyone is willing to help as a Region Liaison, whether it is attending MAEA Council meetings (January, March, and May – one Saturday meeting in those months and the May meeting is during the Michigan Youth Arts Festival at Western Michigan!), hosting a social event, or helping with the Student Art Exhibition at the Museum, please let me know.
Thank you for your continued dedication to our profession and our students,
MAEA Region 11 Co-Liaison

Many members from our Region attended the 2016 Conference in Traverse City, and we are excited about Detroit next year! In the Western Upper Peninsula we are collaborating with the Copper Country Reading Council for an Art and Writing Contest called "Northwoods Kids", inspired by Aimee Bisonette's book "Northwoods Girl". This is the 2nd year of the contest. Last year we had over 200 entries. One more bit of news from our Region...I think this is kind of exciting - I will be leading a one day PD for Art Educators on Showing Student Growth in Art and SLO's....sharing what I learned in an AOE class. We will be at the Copper Country ISD, but members and other art teachers from around the UP will be joining virtually from their ISD's....I am excited to have a meet up like this with our HUGE region. I hope this is the start of maybe a series of PD's. .....Melissa Hronkin
In the Central Upper Peninsula, the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University continues to support K-12 Art programs by offering tours programmed for students with hand-on activities related to the exhibits. The activities are designed by NMU Art Education students who are members of MAEA. Free busing is available to schools that want tours for their students. MAEA members continue to take advantage of the tours. Two NMU Art Education students were able to attend the conference in Traverse City and were very enthusiastic about their experience there. ....Michael Letts
Within the Eastern Upper Peninsula, members have been working towards collaboration with other Arts oriented departments (Performing, Visual and Industrial Arts) to gather resources in order to write the arts into school improvement plans. In addition, through the VPAA within the Eastern U.P., advocacy tools are being developed to demonstrate student growth. MAEIA was discussed and examined as a beneficial data collection tool to demonstrate student growth. ...........Darcy Schreiber
