Hello fellow art teachers!

I can’t believe the New Year is here already. Time has been flying by as I’ve been super busy with work, 3 children, and my involvement with the community art committee Art & About.

With that said, this year has proved to be very difficult to attend MAEA council meetings. The upcoming March (Artwork Adjudication in Lansing) and May (Pick up of MYAF, previous year’s Governor’s traveling show, and previous years MDE show in Kalamazoo) meetings fall on weekends that are close or on my children’s birthdays. I need at least one or two people who can help by attending these important meetings. I am planning on attending the January Council meeting, weather permitting the travel to Grand Rapids.

Show dates to mark your calendar:

- Thursday, Jan. 25 from 4-7pm Art Drop Off at the Saginaw Art Museum for the artwork submission. Remember, this show is for all Region 11 art    teachers, regardless of MAEA membership. If you are a teacher involved with the Frankenmuth Snowfest, you may turn in your student work prior to Thursday, Jan. 25. Just drop it off at the museum during their hours of operation and I will check in your artwork during the drop off time. Adjudication for what MAEA members’ students’ artwork will be Friday, Jan. 26. I plan to communicate the results the same day.
- Show opens Feb. 2nd at the Saginaw Art Museum.
- Feb. 7th is a Free WNEM after-hours reception. (The museum does not have flyers made this year, so you can just communicate it via email with your students.)
- Saturday, Feb. 24th Closing reception from 1-3 p.m. This is always a great time to celebrate our students we will handout their certificates at 2 p.m. As in previous years, the artwork not going onto the MAEA Adjudication in Lansing will be returned at the end of the reception.

A few notes to consider:

  1. If you are like me and you wait until the last minute to renew your MAEA membership before the show, please bring a copy of your renewal receipt so your students’ work will be juried for the March adjudication. I will have an updated copy of membership from Dec. 31, 2017.
  2. Everyone needs to make sure that you go the MAEA website ( to access the Entry Forms. They can be found under the EVENTS heading and the blue tab entitled MICHIGAN YOUTH ARTS FESTIVAL. Members will find the auto fill version of the K-12 Entry Form which should work automatically. Typing into this form also produces an inventory sheet at the end and autofills other important information. If it is not working, please notify Jane Inhulsen and MI Youth Arts Festival Co-chair Sarah Nott The entry form is the only document you need to use! You do not need to complete any other inventory forms.
  3. Check that you are completing the artwork guidelines.

Region 16, 17, 18: Upper Peninsula
Melissa Hronkin, Darcy Schreiber, Michael Letts

Many members from our Region attended the 2016 Conference in Traverse City, and we are excited about Detroit next year!  In the Western Upper Peninsula we are collaborating with the Copper Country Reading Council for an Art and Writing Contest called "Northwoods Kids",  inspired by Aimee Bisonette's book "Northwoods Girl".  This is the 2nd year of the contest.  Last year we had over 200 entries.   One more bit of news from our Region...I think this is kind of exciting -   I will be leading a one day PD for Art Educators on Showing Student Growth in Art and SLO's....sharing what I learned in an AOE class.  We will be at the Copper Country ISD, but members and other art teachers from around the UP will be joining virtually from their ISD's....I am excited to have a meet up like this with our HUGE region.  I hope this is the start of maybe a series of PD's.            .....Melissa Hronkin

In the Central Upper Peninsula, the DeVos Art Museum at Northern Michigan University continues to support K-12 Art programs by offering tours programmed for students with hand-on activities related to the exhibits.  The activities are designed by NMU Art Education students who are members of MAEA.  Free busing is available to schools that want tours for their students.  MAEA members continue to take advantage of the tours.  Two NMU Art Education students were able to attend the conference in Traverse City and were very enthusiastic about their experience there.           ....Michael Letts

Within the Eastern Upper Peninsula, members have been working towards collaboration with other Arts oriented departments (Performing, Visual and Industrial Arts) to gather resources in order to write the arts into school improvement plans.  In addition, through the VPAA within the Eastern U.P., advocacy tools are being developed to demonstrate student growth.  MAEIA was discussed and examined as a beneficial data collection tool to demonstrate student growth.       ...........Darcy Schreiber
