Greetings Elementary Division!

I am so excited to be serving the MAEA as the new elementary division chair. My name is Lani Warner-Yuen and I am currently an elementary art teacher for Walled Lake Schools in the suburbs of Detroit. For the last several years, I have taught kindergarten through fifth graders, as well as my districts art camp during the summers. I have taught secondary as well, but in my opinion there is nothing like the excitement of an elementary class walking into an art room.
My goal as elementary division chair is to:
• Provide timely communication.
• Create a community of art educators who can provide encouragement, support, and inspirations to others.
• Deliver advocacy information.

One of the ways I want to accomplish my goal is through a Facebook page dedicated to the elementary division of MAEA. If you are member of Facebook, search for the “Michigan Art Education Association Elementary Division” page. There you will find pictures of division events, links to great websites, upcoming events, lesson ideas, and discussion topics.
It is an exciting time for elementary art teachers and their students as they await the MAEA state show. The elementary division state show will be in Grand Rapids at Kendall College of Art and Design June 14-25, 2010. The top 15 student artworks will be exhibited June 1-25. In addition, the top 15 pieces will be on display at the MAEA conference, November 4-6. It’s going to be a great show once again and I hope all of you can attend.
